Transforming the Bank of China Visa Application Centre into an environment that excites visitors about China.

Brief:

The Bank of China, franchisee for the Chinese Government’s Visa Application Service Centres, was relocating its London Visa Centre to a new flagship site in the City of London. The bank recognised the opportunity to evolve the Centre, transforming a formerly cramped, confusing and impersonal space into a much-improved environment, with the capacity to challenge expectations of a visa centre and inspire visitors about their destination.

What’s the Big Idea?

EDGE created a ‘gateway to China’, celebrating historical and cultural references to China. Materials and finishes were reminiscent of Chinese craft and heritage. Clearly-demarcated zones and a new bi-lingual and icon-based signage hierarchy promote easy customer wayfinding. A specially-commissioned graphic feature is based on traditional Chinese blue and white ceramic storytelling and narrates the great historical and contemporary story of trade from East to West via river-based imagery.

Return on Investment:

The popularity of the scheme led to it being adopted as a blueprint for the Bank of China’s other UK centres. EDGE was asked to adapt the scheme for Edinburgh, with Birmingham and Manchester to follow.
