We successfully obtained Planning Approval for an application for demolition of an existing building, Change of Use and construction of a new building to provide a new funeral home in Laindon, Essex for T Cribbs & Sons, a family-owned company established 141 years ago. T Cribbs currently has 18 funeral homes located in East London and South Essex. This new funeral home will enable T Cribbs to provide community-based services to the families in the Laindon area and will support its other facilities locally.

Mark O’Neill, Managing Director, says…

“Our design responded to the opportunity to make a positive contribution to the locality and to enhance the urban and local context. It is a key corner site on a primary route, St Nicholas Lane, linking Basildon with Laindon and one which was sensitive architecturally to the surrounding neighbourhood which is predominantly single, two and three storey residential buildings.

The design features a pitched roof and a linear vernacular with soft edges, tactile finishes including brick, timber, stone, neutral colours and warm metals. The building will provide front of house services,  including 4 chapels of rest, arrangement rooms, memorial rooms, reception, back of house offices and a kitchenette for staff. Each area has been devised to enable reflection and provide a space for families to be together.

The spaces around the building are also part of our overall design aesthetic and direction. Care has been taken to introduce thoughtful landscaped areas supporting biodiversity and respecting existing landscaping retained. The site had originally been designated as a World War 1 memorial garden. A small rose garden at the back will hark back to this history.
